How the digital product passport is being introduced

The requirements are coming product group by product group. Here are the key milestones so far.

8 January 2026Applies to you

New Construction Products Regulation (CPR)

Environmental information becomes part of the declaration of performance for construction products, and product passports are introduced gradually.

20 July 2026

The DPP registry opens

The European Commission’s central product passport registry is live, with a test environment for businesses.

18 February 2027

First requirement: batteries

Certain types of large batteries must have a digital product passport.

The European Commission’s DPP registry opened on 20 July 2026. The first mandatory requirement applies to certain types of large batteries from 18 February 2027. For other product groups, requirements will come through separate delegated acts in the coming years.

Batteries come first. The EU working plan for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) for 2025–2030 prioritises iron and steel, aluminium, textiles, tyres, furniture and mattresses, among others. For construction products, the new Construction Products Regulation (CPR) paves the way for a digital product passport. The timing for each product group is set in separate legal acts.

A digital product passport must contain structured information about the product, and an important part of this is documentation of its climate and environmental impact. A verified EPD, based on a life cycle assessment (LCA), is a key source of this data.
