LCA.no launched a new EPD solution for SBMI members

On Thursday 1 October, LCA.no attended the industry day of Sveriges Bergmaterialindustri (SBMI) in Gothenburg. The focus was on how digitalisation and industry collaboration can make EPD work easier and more valuable for the aggregates industry. Cato Hansen and Bjørn Flagestad were there. Both are Key Account Managers at LCA.no.

Around 200 participants from the aggregates industry gathered. Topics of the day included environmental permitting and material supply. Circularity, research, safety and the working environment were also on the programme.

In the EPD part of the programme, SBMI presented its own EPD guidance. Cato Hansen gave a talk on the EPD tool from LCA.no. Afterwards, he took part in a panel discussion on EPDs in the aggregates industry together with Rikard Hellgren from SBMI, among others.

From documentation to data

Cato Hansen pointed to a clear development in the industry. Environmental documentation used to be mainly about showing the carbon footprint of a product. Now it is more about what the data can be used for. The data must be able to be shared and linked to the rest of the product information.

EPDs are about more than meeting documentation requirements. They give manufacturers insight into their own environmental impact. They also provide a better basis for improvement. At the same time, customers get access to relevant environmental information.

“Together with SBMI, we want to make it easier for members to meet today’s needs and be better prepared for tomorrow’s requirements.”

Industry solution exclusive to SBMI members

Through the collaboration with SBMI, LCA.no has developed an industry-adapted EPD solution exclusively for the association’s members. The aim is to lower the threshold for getting started, make work on environmental declarations more efficient and enable more consistent environmental documentation.

The solution makes it easier for members to meet today’s needs and be better prepared for tomorrow’s requirements.

Conversations during the breaks

While Cato Hansen was on stage, Bjørn Flagestad spent the day meeting the industry. He works with new customers at LCA.no.

“There was a great atmosphere and friendly people. It was also useful to make contacts and build a network,” says Bjørn Flagestad.

He noticed that requirements from clients are increasing. The industry wants to deliver what customers ask for. At the same time, many find EPDs complicated and costly. In addition, environmental and nature considerations are placing more and more restrictions on the industry.

The impression of LCA.no was good. The details of the industry solution were first presented at the webinar on 13 October.

The advice from Bjørn Flagestad is simple.

“Make EPDs now,” he says.

This is exactly what the industry solution is designed to make easier and more affordable for SBMI members.

With increasing digitalisation and the development of the Digital Product Passport (DPP), structured and accessible product data is becoming increasingly important.

Facts about the Digital Product Passport

  • A Digital Product Passport gathers information about a product in one place. The information is available with a simple scan.
  • The passport can show materials and production, among other things. Repair, recycling and environmental impact are also included.
  • The EU is introducing the requirements gradually. For construction products, they are expected between 2028 and 2030.
  • A product passport is about much more than climate data. But the climate data is often the most demanding part to put in place.
  • With an EPD in place, you are well on your way.
