Norwegian furniture industry takes action for increased sustainability – Developing a new digital solution

The Norwegian furniture industry is investing in innovation and sustainability through a new collaborative project designed to optimize circularity, efficiency, and resource reuse. The project is a partnership between LCA.no AS, PlussLab, and Norsk Industri Designindustrien, and will utilize Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) as the foundation for more data-driven sustainable development within the furniture sector.

Groundbreaking technology and collaboration

The project aims to develop a digital solution connecting various stakeholders across the value chain, providing manufacturers and purchasers with insights into the expected carbon footprint of different product categories. Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), the system will gather and analyze data from both national and international databases. This will simplify the industry’s approach to environmental documentation and facilitate more sustainable choices.

Key industry players involved

LCA.no: A leading provider of tools and services for environmental documentation and innovation. Their tools are research-based and adhere to international standards, ensuring high professional quality and efficient development of environmental documentation.

PlussLab:
A national competence center driving innovation, commercialization, and sustainable development in the furniture, interior design, fashion, sports, and textile industries. They play a key role in initiating projects, sharing knowledge, and creating collaborative platforms.

Norsk Industri: The industry association for the Norwegian furniture industry, working to strengthen its members’ competitiveness. The organization owns the EPD generator, a specialized tool from LCA.no used to create environmental documentation for furniture. This generator will play a key role in the project.

Pilot companies contribute insights

To ensure the solution meets industry needs, four leading Norwegian furniture manufacturers—Vestre, Flokk, Fora Form, and Søve—are participating as pilot companies. Their experiences will help test and further develop the tool so it can be used across various products and production processes.
