By following us on our digital channels, you’ll have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the various roles and skilled employees here at LCA.no.
In a previous interview we had the pleasure of speaking with our LCA consultant, Camilla Emilie Ruud.
Now, let’s turn our attention to Mie Vold, one of the foremost experts in environmental documentation with extensive international experience. Mie has been an integral part of LCA.no since its inception and plays a crucial role as a member of our management team, overseeing research and innovation.
Could you please provide us with some information about your background?
I hold a degree in chemical engineering from Østfold University College, specializing in environmental studies. Throughout my career, I have gained extensive experience in environmental analysis and the development of life cycle analysis methodologies. My background is quite diverse, and not many people are aware that I also have a background in banking. However, my career choices have always been with companies that heavily invest in research and innovation. For instance, I have had the opportunity to work in the research laboratory of the Brewery Industry and Borregaard. Borregaard is an excellent example of an industry that has successfully transformed research and innovation into a profitable business while addressing significant environmental challenges. My involvement in environmental documentation began when I joined Østfoldforskning (now Norsus) in 1990. During this time, I played a key role in the development of our largest investment area, the Institute for Environmental Protection Research. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, I couldn’t resist the temptation to join the establishment of LCA.no in 2016 before becoming part of LCA.no AS. Prior to Østfold research, I gained valuable experience working in the research laboratory of Bryggerindustrien, as well as in the banking sector.
What is the responsibility of your role at LCA.no?
I spend a lot of my time on R&D (Research & Development). It is a demanding task because it is not just about following a detailed job description. To a large extent, I have to define and prioritize the work tasks myself. I am often used as a mentor in projects we carry out for our customers. We are growing quickly and we are getting many new employees. Although everyone is very competent, and has a high and relevant education, we get extra good use of their capacity if they have experienced resources they can rely on.
What does a typical week look like for you?
The beauty of it is that there is no such thing as a typical week. This constant variation is what truly inspires me in my work. Each week brings something new and exciting. Of course, there are times when the workload is heavy and demanding, especially when we are dealing with extensive and intricate offers and applications for research projects. But that’s all part of the challenge, and I embrace it wholeheartedly.
What is the optimal approach to environmental documentation?
Answering this question can be challenging as it largely depends on the desired outcome. However, one highly recommended option is the use of EPD. EPD stands out because it encompasses the entire life cycle, leveraging the principles of LCA. Moreover, EPD is standardized, ensuring objectivity, and it can be seamlessly integrated at each stage of the value chain, making it adaptable. Additionally, EPD offers the advantage of verified documentation, providing credibility and trustworthiness.
What sets apart the businesses that have made significant strides in environmental documentation and the utilization of modern tools for this purpose?
These businesses are proactive and employ environmental documentation not only to showcase their current status, but also as a foundation for continuous improvement. Moreover, they have a strong foundation in managing their ventures. Many of these businesses operate in industries that have long been influenced by national and international laws, regulations, and standards pertaining to climate footprints. We also have examples of businesses that aspire to be pioneers, having established sustainability strategies and invested in cutting-edge digital solutions such as EPD before their competitors. These businesses are distinguished by their profound understanding of the climate footprint across the entire value chain and their ability to leverage this knowledge to enhance their competitive positioning without compromising their impact on society’s climate footprint.
How do you keep up to date with the latest trends and developments in the EPD world?
The users of EPD are very diverse. In order to stay ahead, I make it a point to include every aspect of the value chain, from research environments and industry organizations to authorities and user groups. I constantly analyze trends throughout the entire value chain and keep a close eye on developments in industry standards. LinkedIn has proven to be an invaluable resource for me, as I subscribe to the most relevant senders and gain access to a wealth of pertinent information. One such example is EPD-Norway, which provides me with up-to-date news. Additionally, my customers serve as valuable partners, seeking my guidance whenever they encounter new challenges or opportunities.
How do you integrate this knowledge into your work?
I will share it with the R&D team and engage in discussions with my colleagues. For other topics, I will bring them up during the management group meetings. I will prioritize the relevance of the information for our digital tools and explore ways to expand and enhance these findings to align with the latest trends.
We are growing and we are looking for new employees. What makes us an attractive workplace for them?
We engage in impactful and diverse work that is both enlightening and fulfilling, paving the way for a brighter future. Joining our team grants you the chance to shape social progress. Our colleagues are truly remarkable, fostering an environment of freedom and accountability. If you harbor aspirations of leadership, there is ample opportunity for advancement within our ranks..
When not focused on assisting our customers in their environmental endeavors, how do you unwind?
After a long day’s work, I find solace in simply lounging on the sofa. I frequently take leisurely strolls with my furry companion, immersing myself in the beauty of forests and mountains. Additionally, as both a grandmother and a wife, I cherish the precious moments spent with my loved ones. Socializing with dear friends also brings me immense joy.
We express our gratitude to Mie for the enlightening conversation and eagerly anticipate the advancements in our innovative work.
